Description:
A partial skull associated with whale (Agorophius pygmaeus) remains. The American Museum of Natural History tag that accompanies it reads, "Holmes Coll. Anterior part of skull of Phocodon homesi (Agassiz), from Eocene of Ashley River, S.C. Cetacean." We now know the layer the skull was collected from was Oligocene in age, not Eocene. The name "Phocodon holmesi" is an informal synonym as the species was never formalized in publication.
