Photograph showing evidence of little damage from the earthquake that occurred on August 31, 1886 to the home Charles R. Holmes, Jr. located at 19 East Battery Street with the piazzas of the residence of Charles Alston (21 East Battery, now the Edmonston-Alston House) visible to the right. The Adamesque mansion was replaced by the present day yellow brick residence designed by Albert Simons, c. 1920. Caption on reverse reads, "Taken after the 31st of August, 1886. No. 65, _____Holmes, East Battery". Handwritten on the bottom, front reads, "Charleston Earthquake Scene. - Holmes Residence, East Battery."

George LaGrange Cook was a well-known photographer in Charleston who photographed the destruction of the 1886 earthquake soon after it happened, producing a series of images titled "Cook's Earthquake Views of Charleston and Vicinity" that could be purchased as souvenirs.
