A large crowd of spectators can be seen in the distance. Paine's notation on reverse reads, "Lawrence Eustis, New Orleans, winning qualification medal on 9th green. Southern Championship, Savannah, Ga. May [19]05."

The Southern Amateur was an amateur golf tournament that started in 1902 and played at match play until 1964 when it changed to stroke play. Andrew Manson won the tournament in 1904 and 1905.
