Description:

Black and white photograph from a glass negative of an oak tree located on Ingleside Plantation. Handwritten caption on front reads, "General Marion's Oak, Ingleside, S.C.". Handwritten on the envelope found with the negative reads, "Genl Marion's Tree, Ingleside, S.C."

Over the years, the life of Francis Marion has become quite legendary, with many exaggerated details being passed down and written about his time spent as a General in the American Revolutionary War. However, one story that has been proven to be true, is the story of Marion inviting a British General to dine on roasted sweet potatoes with him during a prisoner exchange negotation. This dinner was supposedly conducted under an oak tree (presumably in a swamp) in an unknown location and, because of this, quite a number of oak trees have been called "General Marion's Tree."
