Description:

Photograph of Josephine Pinckney wearing a dress that once belonged to her ancestor Eliza Lucas Pinckney. According to historical records, the three-piece gold damask saque dress was made of silk cultivated from silkworms raised on Eliza Lucas Pinckney's Belmont Plantation. The handwritten notation on reverse incorrectly identifies the subject as "Sally M. Pinckney in Eliza Lucas Dress (Mrs. E. Milby Burton)."

The old card stated the dress was on display at the Old Exchange Building by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina.

The dress is now in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, object ID 2008.0002.001.
