Larus attricilla, Gull egg

Sample Image
Description:

Broken fragment from a laughing gull (Larus atricilla) egg collected from White Banks, Bulls Bay in Charleston County by Alexander Sprunt, Jr. in May 1933. Sprunt takes ample notes on this fragment: "On May 23rd, the first nest and eggs of this species to be found in S.C. was discovered at the above locality by Messrs. Burton and Chamberlain of The Charleston Museum. It contained 2 eggs which were left undisturbed. On May 30, 1933, I visited the locality with Mr. West, Superintendent of the V.S. Wildlife Reservation in which White Banks is situated and found the nest had been broken up, presumably by crows. A large fragment of one egg was found at the edge of the nest and this was taken, and is the subject of this data. It is the only specimen evidence in existence of the 1st set of this species known for S.C."
