Photograph of Mayor J. Palmer Gaillard speaking with Elizabeth Simons during a reception celebrating her retirement. Simons served as the curator of education for 38 years.
During her time in the Education Deparment, Simons developed Nature Trails classes and was in charge of the Museum's planetarium programs. She was described as "soft-spoken and infinitely patient" who "conducted countless classes, and led thousands of schoolchildren on nature walks and field trips."

The image was published in the October 20 "Charleston News and Courier."
