Page 50: Unloading "Rita"

Description:

Photograph of the Spanish cargo ship, "Rita" docked at one of the Central wharves. Sams set his camera up at the end of Market Street overlooking what is now Concord Street to capture the scene. The iron fence of the U.S. Custom House can just be seen to the right. His handwritten notation beneath the image reads, "Unloading 'Rita' prize in Spanish American War."

On May 8, 1898 the USS "Yale" captured the cargo ship "Rita" off of Puerto Rico and sent her to Charleston where the ship was outfitted and supplied.
