Contact The Charleston Museum for image use and credit instructions.

Description:

A sample of sillimanite-quartz schist white to gray in color, with orange (hematite?) areas on one side. There is some dark gray to brown staining or weathering and the sillimanite is white, and occurs in bunches of extremely fine, hairlike, but brittle crystals of light gray quartz. Collected about 3/4 of a mile north of the Winnsboro Blue Granite Company quarry, 8 miles west of Winnsboro, circa 1972.
